![]() ![]() Ken was slated to compete at the hill climb last year for the first time in his career, but an engine problem forced him to withdraw. The event had been near and dear to Ken’s heart, and he often spoke of it as the very first race that captured his imagination as a child. Even completing the prestigious race is considered one of the most difficult achievements in motorsports. ![]() The highlight of the year, however, undoubtedly came at Pikes Peak. ![]() “I feel like I have something to prove in my rally.” “I’ve definitely been amping up my skill level for sure, and it’s all about confidence for me,” says Lia, who’s been performing racing stunts on camera since she was 13. Lia’s success even landed her an invite to join Extreme E, a global, electric off-road racing series with teams owned by McLaren, Lewis Hamilton, and the Andretti family, among other major names. Lucy has scored podiums in the ARA’s limited four-wheel-drive class, while Lia-who only got her driver’s license late last year-has been absolutely crushing it, winning the past three races and currently leading her class in the ARA championship. Fans around the world are loving it, and at the end of the day, it’s really what Ken would’ve wanted us to do.”Īnd despite having only limited professional racing experience under their belts, Lucy and Lia have been posting some impressive results. ![]() “All of us were pleasantly surprised to see how quickly Lucy and the family decided to carry on Ken’s legacy. “It’s still so fresh-Ken passed away barely six months ago,” says Alex Gelsomino, Ken’s longtime rally co-driver, who agreed to serve as Lucy’s navigator this season. “We decided that this was the best way not to give up, not to give in,” Lucy says.įor those who knew Ken best, the Block family’s decision to rally on, in spite of the tragedy, has been an uplifting development in an otherwise somber year. And they established the 43 Institute, after Ken’s racing number, which provides funding for up-and-coming racers and other initiatives aimed at promoting rally. So, this year, both Lucy and Lia have been competing full time in the American Rally Association (ARA) championship-which consists of off-road time-trials through dirt, snow, and gravel-as well as special, one-off events like Pikes Peak. ![]()
